It is surprising to hear people say upon their first visit to
Seacrest Kennels and Cattery ´they did not know there was a
local kennel´ - after all Seacrest has been located in the Nerja
area (map spot 68) for more than 25 years. It was purpose
built in a classic Spanish style with red tiled roofs and white
painted walls throughout, where each casita has its own secure
double sized play area. There is also a very large yard in the
back where the dogs are exercised and the grounds are
complemented by a grooming room in the lovely front garden.
Traditionally, Seacrest has been a family affair and has been
under the proprietorship of Vera and Derek, as well as their
daughter Laura and her husband Kurt, since 1999.

Vera and Derek moved from South Yorkshire to Nerja, realising a long-term ambition to own
boarding kennels when they purchased Seacrest. They adjusted to their new life as proprietors in
Spain by combining hard work with over 15 years of experience in breeding, grooming and showing
standard poodles. These were essential in building a robust clientele and a first-class reputation all
along the Costa del Sol. As Vera and Derek entertained plans of semi-retirement, Laura and Kurt
joined them and the reigns of Seacrest were officially handed over on January 1st, 2006. Laura, a
registered nurse for 18 years, now applies her caring nature with animals as she oversees the daily
operations. Kurt, previously an accounting manager, also provides for the daily needs of the boarders
and applies his business acumen where needed. Both have cared for their own animals since they were
children and together they manage Seacrest as a full service kennels and cattery that caters to the
needs of your pets.
In addition to traditional boarding Seacrest also provides Grooming, Doggy Day Care, Transportation,
Puppy Socialization and Training services. Included in the daily boarding rate is a high quality food and
the animals are given treats, cuddles and exercise throughout the day. The casitas and their individual
play areas come in various dimensions to accommodate the number and size of the pets in your family.
Multiple feedings and special diets may be arranged while medication, injections and other special care
are easily managed with Laura´s nursing background. Furthermore, the kennels are fully licensed and
come highly recommended by local veterinary clinics and pet stores. Laura and Kurt place a high
priority on safety and cleanliness by applying a stringent inoculation and disinfection policy.
Vera and Derek still keep their hands in by working at Seacrest several times a week. Vera can be seen
either in the kennels or grooming a dog while Derek keeps in tune the scissoring skills he developed
over the years for Crufts and other shows. Grooming and bathing services are provided on a by
appointment basis. The newer items on the menu are Doggy Day Care and Puppy Socialization. Doggy
Day Care allows your dog to be looked after in a secure environment but without an overnight stay.
Puppy Socialization involves a gathering of pups (with current vaccinations) between the ages of 12 to
24 weeks to play and interact with their peers – a crucial part of their development.
The most rewarding aspects of their work for the Seacrest crew are caring for your pets and the help
they lend to the Costa Animal Society. Together they play various roles in the re-homing of rescues
and assist CAS in other ways, such as the hosting of an annual barbeque fundraiser. This popular
event is held every July, so book ahead by contacting the CAS office at 95-252-3607
or Richard at 95-203-7095. Seacrest has always been a family affair and Laura, Kurt,
Vera and Derek are dedicated to their family tradition of caring for your pets they way
you do.
